Working Life of Earnings Inadequate for UK Labor Force to Enter Most Affluent 10%, Analysis Says

According to fresh study, the typical earner in the UK would need 52 years' worth of income to achieve the net worth of the most affluent 10% in the country.

Expanding Economic Disparity Over Time

This research reviewed financial assets information covering the 2020-22 timeframe and determined that in 2006-08, it would have needed 38 years' worth of average worker salary to join the richest segment of the economic ladder.

A research lead involved with the report commented: "Financial divides in Britain are presently so substantial that a regular employee saving all their earnings across their entire working life would still not be able to achieve the peak of the economic scale."

Quantifying the Economic Gap

The analysis found that the gap between the assets of the typical individual and a person belonging to the top 10% was one million pounds in 2006-08, but had expanded to 1.3 million pounds in inflation-adjusted terms by 2020-22.

The economist added: "These gaps are particularly worrying as financial progression in Britain is limited – people that start life well-off tend to continue being rich, and vice versa."

Comparative Financial Divide

Even with the financial disparity expanding in absolute terms, the share of total wealth in the UK owned by the wealthiest families – termed "proportional economic disparity" – has been "mostly consistent since the 1980s," according to the analysis.

Over this timeframe, total wealth in the UK surged from three times the gross domestic product, to approximately 7.5x.

Drivers of Financial Divide

Referred to as "passive" gains, by means of increasing property values and changes in pension valuations, were the key contributors of the expanding economic divide from 2010 onward, per the report.

These increases generally flowed to senior citizens with real estate, the analysis reveals – exacerbating the generational financial disparity.

Generational Financial Divides

The median economic difference between thirty-somethings and sixty-somethings more than doubled in actual value, from 135 thousand pounds in the mid-2000s, to £310,000.

Regional Disparities

Additionally, there were significant geographic differences, with the average level of net worth in recent years amounting to 290 thousand pounds in the southeastern region, where real estate values have tended to rise rapidly, as opposed to £110,000 in the NE of England.

Pandemic Period Consequences

Amid the health crisis, when countless laborers were supported by the government-supported job retention program, and health crisis restrictions reduced expenditure possibilities, the information reveals many households were able to save, growing their net worth.

Wealthier families performed significantly better, however. "The average household in the bottom income bracket saw their available funds increase by just £80 over the pandemic period (2019-20 to 2021-22), approximately equivalent to the 24 months before COVID. On the other hand, the median home in the top income bracket saw their cash reserves rise by £4,200," the study reveals.
