The US Justice Department has entered the fray in a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, aiming to block the California's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This legal action, filed in a US district court, targets the map supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and undermines the democratic process," stated the US attorney general.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The legal challenge claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the major response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
