The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a Latest Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The anticipation around The Game Awards was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a desert monolith. The mystery has now been solved. The acclaimed developer is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was debuted with a bold trailer featuring memorable imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio clarified that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not currently in development.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This phrasing hints that the team is likely building a real-time experience instead of another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it sparked the contemporary revival of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, player agency, and complex character building—qualities that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is traditional swords and sorcery, what makes Divinity apart is the immense freedom bestowed upon the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths only possible by choosing a distinct build with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, allowing players to experiment both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be solved in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can get ready for another adventure in this esteemed franchise.
