EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the US against five European individuals working on fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in condemning the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing political and ideological clash involving the current US administration and European institutions.

Additional Updates Reported Today

In other judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to cut federal homeland security funding to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge stated the action was “another example” of linking government assistance to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city prior to the new year, coinciding with an ongoing border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in dozens of individuals from the US in exchange for increased assistance, after concluding a memorandum of understanding with Washington.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has filed a lawsuit to demand the stripping of a political figure’s name from a prominent cultural institution in the capital.

Experts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources reflect a wider ideology in certain circles of “economic expansionism”, drawing comparisons with past foreign policy actions.
